How to Extract YouTube Video Tags (Single Videos, Playlists & Channels)

When you look at top ranking videos in your niche, checking their tags gives you a quick peek at the exact keywords other creators are targeting. Sure, titles and thumbnails get the clicks, but video tags show how people categorize their content for YouTube search.

For a long time, the only way to see these tags was to open the video, right click, hit "View Page Source", press Ctrl+F, and search for the word "keywords". It's slow, messy, and super annoying if you want to check more than one video.

 1. Extract Tags from a Single YouTube Video or Shorts

If you are uploading a new video or updating an old one, checking the tags on 3 or 4 top videos in your topic gives you a fast starting point. Our video tag extractor works for normal YouTube videos (youtube.com/watch?v=...) and also YouTube Shorts links (youtube.com/shorts/...).

Here is how you do it:

First, go to the Video / Shorts tab on the tag extractor. Paste your video or Shorts link into the box and click View Tags. The tool will grab the data and show the tags as clickable chips right below the box.

There are a few really helpful features on this screen:

• Actual Tags vs Description Tags: YouTube has two kinds of tags. The first are the hidden tags the creator enters in YouTube Studio. The second are hashtags they type inside the video description, like #coding. By default, the tool shows the hidden tags in light grey boxes. If you tick the "Tags in description" box, it will also display the hashtags in darker boxes so you can tell them apart.
• Skip Duplicates: A lot of creators type the exact same keywords in both the tag box and the description. The Skip duplicates option is turned on by default to keep your list clean. If you really want to see every single tag used in both places, just uncheck it.
• Sorting Tags: If a video uses 30 tags, reading them in random order takes time. You can use the Sort tags dropdown to organize them alphabetically, or put the longest text first to see specific search phrases at the top.
• Pick Specific Tags: Every tag has its own checkbox. You can click just the tags you want, or hit Select All. The counters at the top show you how many total tags were found and how many you currently picked.

When you're ready, you can hit Copy to grab your selected tags separated by commas. You can paste this straight into your YouTube Studio tag box. You can also click Copy with Hashtag to add a # in front of every tag for your descriptions, or just download them as a simple .txt file.

 2. Bulk Export Tags from an Entire YouTube Playlist

Checking videos one by one is fine for quick tasks. But if you want to research a 20-video tutorial series, a course, or a competitor's whole playlist, doing it manually takes way too long.

Just click the Playlist tab and paste the playlist link into the box. Then pick the file formats you want. We support spreadsheets like CSV and Excel, data files like JSON or XML, and regular text formats.

Switch to the Channel tab and paste the channel URL or just a link to any video uploaded by that creator. You can use the Media Type filter to choose what kind of content you want. You can pull tags from all videos, or filter to check just regular videos, Shorts only, or past live streams. Select your file format and click Export Tags.

Putting a CSV of a competitor's channel into Google Sheets is a great way to see which core tags they put on almost every video. Or, if you have an older channel with lots of videos, exporting your own tags lets you quickly spot videos where you forgot to add tags or where your keywords are just outdated. Also, checking Shorts separately helps you figure out if short videos need different tags compared to regular long videos.

 Simple Tips for Using Extracted Tags

Borrowing ideas from ranking videos is smart, but copying every tag blindly is usually a bad idea. Keep these points in mind:

• Watch the 500 Character Limit: YouTube only allows 500 characters in the tag box. Pick 8 to 12 relevant tags instead of stuffing the box with random words.
• Leave Out Brand Names: If another creator uses their own name or channel name as a tag, do not copy it. Adding unrelated brand names actually goes against YouTube rules.
• Check for Common Typos: Look at what competitors use for hard to spell words. One helpful job of tags is catching misspelled search terms that people type into YouTube.
• Make Sure the Tags Match Your Video: Your video title, description, and the actual content matter way more than tags. Only use tags that clearly match what happens in your video.
